Kandude or Optimism in Our Time is a sharp, satirical journey through the tangled mess of America. Following Kandude’s reluctant adventure out of privilege, the book brilliantly skewers neoliberal optimism, political grifters, and religious extremism with biting wit and unsettling accuracy. I loved how the story balanced its absurd humor with moments of real poignancy—Kandude’s transformation feels both timely and timeless. This is a great read if you enjoy political satire that doesn’t shy away from uncomfortable truths while still keeping you thoroughly entertained.

This is a clever adaptation of Voltaire’s Candide, which was written in 1758. Three centuries later, we are still dealing with similar problems of human nature, religion, and extremism in politics. Kandude is a prime example of literature as news. This philosophical tale is a pessimistic rumination on the politics of our time. Although it is satirical, this modern-day story accurately reflects the current state of the world. You will recognize many of the characters (despite their pseudonyms) who are wreaking havoc on politics in the United States. This provocative novella is a quick, entertaining read.

I am a primary school teacher and cannot recommend the book to my young students since it’s not a children’s book, but I have shared information about your book with several colleagues and friends. I did leave a 5 star rating on GoodReads and BookBub.
